Home Jazz Alley

From Louis Armstrong to Charlie Parker to the new greats of today, this is the place for Jazz!

Phil Nimmons Atlantic Suite

I had an amazing lunch break at work the other day whereupon I checked out a Salvation Army store that was new to me and proceeded to buy some 40 jazz titles on LP spanning the 50s to 70s, all in excellent shape and for 50 cents apiece. Among them was this LP from 1976 on Sackville. Nimmons is (was) a clarinetist from Canada and this big band record is pretty darn good. I'd never heard of any of the personnel before but the band is solid and the writing kind of reminds me of Maria Schneider (not going to win me any popularity contests around here, I know) in its scope. Sonically, I would put the music more in the Basie-cum-Gerald Wilson bag.

Among the other more noteworthy titles are Frank Rosolino's I Play Trombone, Basie's Straight Ahead, Jim Hall and Ron Carter Live at Village West, and The George Benson Cookbook (in mono, which I prefer to the stereo reissue I already had). One of the best hauls of my thrift career, when I thought those days were long gone. I was smiling the rest of the day.

Over the holidays, I upgraded my cartridge from a Linn Adikt (MM) to a Hana EL (LOMC) with a Denon SUT. My records have never sounded better. :-)
