Today's hip tunes. New music that isn't Classic Rock or Jazz!

Mase recently found God - album Welcome Back is ok

Mase recently found God - album "Welcome Back" is ok - it opens with a cover of the (John Sebastian?) tune that was the theme for the "Welcome Back Kotter" show - it's kind of fun! I once made an album that were all rap covers of well known tunes - it was a lot of fun. Might be good if you want to get your feet wet - he's a reformed gangster.

The album has a lot of fairly smooth beats, is well recorded in terms of a nice wide stereo image, and is really quite enjoyable - no cursing, no putting down woemen - in fact, the opposite attitude. There are only 11 songs (as opposed to the usual 20+ on rap/hiphop albums including always hilarious skits) and two or three of them are skips - but still I play it every couple months or so and enjoy it.

There are a lot of other great hiphop albums out there that although are laced with sex, drugs, and violence have a lot more wit, insight and humor than one will ever find on other popular albums - when you rent a godfather movie you have to expect the result. It isn't all glorification either, many ask why there should be ghetto's in the world's richest country at their core. Still, since 1991 and NWA / Dre / Snoop / Kurupt / Nate Dogg etc, it's degenerated badly to what is the equivalent of a 15th generation fax after 15 years, can barely see the original in there, it's just a 15th generation copy now - but that started happening in rock around 1980, and we're on the 26th generation copy fax now - just watch the top 10 sometime, have a vomit bag handy.

I'd be more inclined to talk about some good gangster style albums I do own and love, if only the hundreds of opionions offered on the subject here on AA included at least one other person who actually owns and knows one of the albums in question! Search the threads of elistists venting on the subject and try and find one with an informed opinion - you typically won't. I applaud anyone who at least wants to listen first - the good albums you find will be their own reward, and if you don't already have any it's a great new adventure in music that will surprise you.
