Today's hip tunes. New music that isn't Classic Rock or Jazz!

Re: this will keep you busy

darn it! it happened again! i posted a long reply here (or at least thought i did) but it's not here... i'll have to repeat my efforts. sigh. i think i know what it is... it's that darned "please wait... ok done" button that pops up for previews. it looks like it's posted when it isn't.

rhino records has one of the best hip hop compilation series' called "street jams: hip hop from the top" you'll find many of the most important jams in the various discs. if you had to get just one collection of old school... this would be it. here's where you'll get the crowd chanting the classics lines:
"the roof the roof the roof is on fire. we don't need no water let the mother f###er burn. burn motherf###er burn" no dance club was without this track. along with such must have tracks as:
"jam on it, the pure, egypt egypt, al-naafiysh (the soul), planet rock (forgot it was on here), megamix II why is it fresh?, a fly girl, 5 minutes of funk, big mouth, king of the beat, friends, one for the treble, when i hear music, funky little beat & let the music play"
"electric funk: part 4" isn't the best disc in the collection. it features the nice enough "i wonder if i take you home" jam for the ladies as well as the so-so "white horse" but nothing else really.

"80's dance party" offers some really great and hard to find tracks (along with alot of junk) but between vol. 1 and vol 2, these tracks are essentials:
rockit, hip hop be bop, looking for a new love, beat dis, point of no return, the dominatrix sleeps tonight, and ESPECIALLY set it off. this slow "reggae" jam was a hip hop staple and the perfect jam to start a party with... just note the lyrics (stolen by that chick you mentioned)
"y'all want this party started right? y'all want this party started QUICKLY. set it off i suggest y'all set it off i suggest. on the left... on the right..."

"rap to the beat" is another good hip hop disc that features "pump up the volume" which is reason enough to get it as hard as the track is to find, but it also features: "i can't live without my radio, it's tricky, & i aint no joke" among a few other decent tracks

for some lesser known tracks, "select old school hip hop" starts out with the track "roxanne roxanne" which was so big, it inspired MANY sequel cuts including "roxanne's dad's mad" LOL there are a couple of tracks from "the real roxanne" that are better here too along with chubb rock's "d.j innovator" and the MTV classic "(nothin' serious) just buggin"

if you'd like some fun sample based tracks, grab a copy of the art of noise's "daft" (best of) CD which features their earliest and rawest tracks including the remix of the break dance classic "beat box" along with the dance track "close to the edit" but the real standout track is "the army now" with it's silly andrews sisters snippets and big bouncing bass drum riffs.

getting more into elecrtonic music, the 4CD ollection "dubnology" is a steal! it's not a typical "every song has the same 188 bpm *thumpthumpthumpthump* beats of most techno which sounds just like house, jungle, breakbeat etc. to me. this stuff has WAY more flavor, but some of the tracks have slight leanings to those styles. you'll find everything from fairly rootsy dub to a stupid fresh track called "um baby" which sounds like the next door neighbor to the way overplayed "oh yeah" by yello. if you have any ravers over... this set will go a long way. it even has a little bit of light industrial on a track or two... but alot of it's funky. i picked it up in a store for just $16... that's a sick $4 per disc! it's worth way more than that!

another electronic disc that's closer to "same old same old" is "electro avengers", but it still has a little bit of variety in it. nowhere near as much as "dubnology" though.

if you want to throw a few old school radio dance hits out, "1980 only dance 1984" is a great compilation that opens with "super freak" (reason enough to get this disc!) but also features such greats as: "rapture, rockit, burnin' down the house, let's hear it for the boy, ladies night, and let the music play" it's a pretty good value for radio hits.

speaking of radio hits, if you want some more recent stuff, "totally hits" & "now that's what i call music" are a couple of great compilation series. eg.

ntwicm 16:
hey ya!: outkast
hey mama
dude: beennie man
leave (get out): jo jo
everytime: britney spears

th 2004 v1:
milkshake: kelis
pass that dutch: missy elliot
i'm still in love with you: sean paul
salt skaker: yin yang twins
tipsy: j-kwon

and one of those 2 series came out with a disc that features "hollaback girl & one thing" among other tracks.

you really need to look around to find a good disc with white lines as everything either features the same things as every other disc, or just old old school sugar hill tracks, most of which aren't that good. beware of single CDs with 40 tracks as they're probably mixes and not full songs. you just can fit 40 5-10 min. songs on an 80 min. max disc.

these collections have some nice essential cuts but i don't own any of them:
pure hip-hop party
o.p.p., the humpty dance, white lines****, paid in full
non stop hip hop
jump, o.p.p., the humpty dance, push it, it takes two, whoomp there it is, funky cold medina,
Back In Tha Day V.1 - canada
planet rock, the freaks come out at night, bust a move
Diggin' in the Crates, Vol. 1 (there's more than 1 v.1)
king kut, sucker m.c.'s, beat bop, here comes that beat, fresh, rock box

some one artist discs include:

the audio two: What More Can I Say
top billin', make it funky
is worth it just for make it funky alone... don't know any of the other tracks besides these two.
make it funky is one of the greats of the "stupid fresh" school of electrofunk. some other great tracks to look out for in this genre are: buffalo gals, gordy's groove, the woppit, suppresto, the army now and the man marley marl. there's a collection of "rare" hip that has "the man marly marl" on it. look it up and check out the samples. the tracks aren't as well known, but a couple of the are really good. the man marly marl has an awesome skipping cowbell beat. you'll catch even otherwise knowledgeable old school fans off guard if you throw that beat down. ;)

kraftwerk made it to the dancefloor alot. three of the tracks that got the most dancefloor play are: numbers (not the version on "the mix"), tour de france, trans europe express. the "ich ni son chi" lines from planet rock were lifted off numbers, and afrika baambataa used to play trans europe express all the time. "computer world" would be the best choice for "numbers" but get the trans europe express album and the CD single of tour de france if you want to be a completist. "the man machine" is another way above average electronic music disc too. "the mix" features total remixes of their old material, and might be of interest for the shorter (original is 20 minutes long) and bouncier version of "autobahn" if you don't mind german lyrics. ALL of these discs are high fidelity too. a couple of them have made stereophile's R2D4 list for sonics.

another electronic band that's made the R2D4 list for sonic quality is new order. if you're looking for some non-hip hop tracks, you couldn't go wrong with their 2 CD best of collection which feautures pretty much everything they've ever done worth hearing. these tracks were staples among the punk/goth dance crowds and made mainstream club play.

along similar lines, a "euro electropop" tune that DID get played alongside hip hop is "state farm" by YAZ. this is a great high energy dance number with an awesome synth melody and electronic drum breaks. i saw one of their discs with this track going for $5 used at yahoo.

zapp & roger More Bounce To The Ounce And Other Hits
which comes out in october looks like a great deal at just $4.20 at cduniverse. it contains dancefloor & doo wah ditty (the only too good tracks on zapp II) along with their well known slow song "i wanna be your man"

tom tom club: tom tom club
opens with two classics that run back to back "wordy rappinghood & genius of love" and the current version features bonus tracks and remixes of these songs. even more popular with hip hoppers was their "pleasure of love" 12" single. it isn't available on CD though

malcom mc laren: duck rock
seems to be the only place to get "buffalo gals" digitally. this track was huge in the day. the CD opens with a great mellow melodic song called "obatala" that would be a great opener (or closer) to a hip hop party.

paul hardcastle/universal funk: zero one
is a lost hip-hop gem. if you can find the CD used... grab it! the standout track is the stupid fresh "drum beat" that features a travelogue announcer saying "left right" back and forth between the speakers with a cool bass drum riff every 8 bars or so, but there's a couple of nice "cuttin' and scratchin'" tracks as well as the much more well known mellow instrumental "rainforest" you won't find demos for any of these tracks as it's always been an import. (i have two vinyl copies and 1 CD... it's that good!)

808xs
makes one of the better "bass" CDs out there. his stuff has a little more bounce and flavor than ocasionally good "magic mike" i've never listened to that other

if you'd like to try something adventerous, look solex's 1st two discs up. the 1st one, "solex vs. the hitmeister" has mega deep bass and plays like portishead fronted by cyndi lauper. it's some interesting electronic music. her second "pick up" CD is a little more uptempo and acoustic. her lyrics are strange and have an even stranger rhythm, but a few of her tracks are accessible and danceable. there's alot worse junk on the radio. LOL

oops! i almost forgot the absolute most awesome must have track for ANY hip-hop party! no self respecting dance party could ever be complete without george clinton's "atomic dog" which has been lifted in hundreds of other hip hop songs... you know the riff...
"bow wow yo yippie yo yippie yay"
this is the original. grab it on the EP CD or buy it on whatever disc you can get it on! i paid $17 for an otherwise useless "best of" collection just for this track!

there... i hope this helps alot. between what's on all of these discs, and whatever else you have, you should have enough tracks to keep a party going a seriously long time. i'm copying and pasting this time, before i forget something else!
