Today's hip tunes. New music that isn't Classic Rock or Jazz!

Long reply

Hey I'm glad you like them! I posted a few weeks back on the Rock board about them after I saw them open for Against Me! (punk band) here in Winnipeg. I've got all three of their albums and am anticipating their latest which they're supposedly going to start writing in the next few weeks.

If you're a bigger fan of the Godspeed style ambient/experimental sound, then the recommendation goes to their first full-length entitled "Like the Exorcist, but More Breakdancing." The album is roughly split between instrumental tracks and lyric tracks. Guitars on this album are laid back more in the mix and use much less distortion and more chorus effect; the result is a much more mellow, progressive feeling album that feels more like experimental indie rock than a driving rhythm and bass rock anthem.

After reading that description, my thoughts on their newer album, "Who Will Survive and What Will be Left of Them?" should come as no shock. The album has much more prominent guitars that use a heavier distortion. The production is much better, most notobably in the vocals which sounded rather light and, honestly, effeminate on their older album. This later album is much more of a driving, head-nodding beat style rock'n'roll than the lighter "Exorcist" album. I also really enjoy the fact that it's a concept album which is always fun when you listen straight through.

Personally, I enjoy the "Survive" album more than the "Exorcist" album, but it all depends on what direction you're coming from on their rather broad spectrum of a fan base. In either case, their first release was a split album with another mellow-indie-prog style band called Volta Do Mar. This is in the style of the "Exorcist" album and, being a split, I would probably buy it last.

Hope that helps.
