Today's hip tunes. New music that isn't Classic Rock or Jazz!

Crap - I can be so unhelpful at times! (Long)

Okay - It has been a while since I saw the interview so I should verify first what I about to say, but against my better advice...

I think it was something about needing to communicate the way she feels emotionally, without the corruptions (ie. arbitrary structures, assumptions, misinterpretations, and lack of spontaneity) associated with transferring the feeling to words.

I guess it may be like a pure poetry, where the sounds and timing convey...

Due to many and varied reasons, that non-language type vocal may be a factor that separates you from that type of music, which of course is fine. Only you can know your truth.

To add my own stream of consciousness ranting (yep, put 'em out there Ray): Most language seems related to the logical, mechanistic, reductionist, arbitrary part of our selves. Whilst language - or indeed other common structures and assumptions - may have a role in emotional communication, some people feel that other approaches are more suitable. I guess that is why many artists "break the rules" as it were - some just find structures too limiting for what they wish to convey. Same could be said for other forms of art.

Looking from another angle: if we perceive voice as an instrument, why should it be limited to words per se? Is this unnecessarily limiting - could there be more to express and experience? Have / do we place these limitations or expectations on other instruments?

Yet another angle: can we enjoy music performed in a real language different to our own? We do not understand the words, but can we still feel emotionally connected to the music? Can a lack of understanding of the language be of some benefit to the listener in experiencing their own emotional moment? I don't know.

Enough! I do know what you mean by "gimmicky" though. I guess it comes down to motivation of the performer, or maybe even more importantly, simply our own multifactorial relationship with the music.

Oh damn, I've really crapped-on this time.

Apologies, Raymond.
