Home Classical Court

From Perotin to Prokofiev (and beyond), performed by Caruso to Khatia, it's all here.

Rushton - what did you think of the different venues on that Bruckner album?

The Mass was recorded in the presumably wide open spaces of the basilica at St. Florian, which would seem perfect for this work. OTOH, the Psalm 146 was recorded at Moore's Opera House in Houston, a place which has almost always seemed impossibly dry to me, based on the other HDTT recordings I've heard from that location. I know John Proffitt always does great work, but I've got to think that St. Florian would suit the music better, and that John's engineering there would be more successful. But what was your impression?

BTW, I have to say that, over the years, I've run hot and cold with the Kertesz set of Dvorak Symphonies. My current opinion is that, while it's a pretty good and efficient set, there are others I like better - mainly the ones with Czech conductors like Neumann (his digital cycle, not his earlier analog cycle, which seems to me relatively weak) and Pesek, not to mention individual performances of the later symphonies (e.g., Dorati in 7 and 8, or Harnoncourt in 7, 8 and 9) - and let's not forget The Dude and the LAPO in those last three symphonies (in Dolby Atmos!).
