From Perotin to Prokofiev (and beyond), performed by Caruso to Khatia, it's all here.

Faster/Slower...Younger/Older...

Based upon some recent recommendations, I've decided to add BOTH of Blomstedt's Beethoven Cycles to my library. In so doing, I am driven by the desire to CLOSELY compare the effects of the various timings and emphases on, and within, each movement of each symphony by the SAME conductor. A couple of factors come into play:

1. There are some noticeable differences (in both directions) between the two sets.

2. Despite being recorded some 40 years apart, the ageless Blomstedt can certainly be said to still be "on top of his game" to provide a truly thought-out interpretation at age near 90 (it is somewhat questionable whether some other aged conductors retained that capability fully).

3. Following some preliminary listenings, it is clear that BOTH sets are simply superb -- so, it is a win-win no matter what!:-)

I'll close with a question. Can anyone recommend any other recordings by a SINGLE CONDUCTOR (not looking for individual performers or ensembles) where such a comparison makes sense (and, by that, I mean there are noticeable differences in the interpretation)? Let's go with a timespan of 40+ years between recordings.
