Home Classical Court

From Perotin to Prokofiev (and beyond), performed by Caruso to Khatia, it's all here.

So I'm going to start with the disclaimer. . .

. . . that I don't believe I listened to anything other than the 5.0 tracks when I had the SACD. But I did listen to a couple of the 2Ch 24/192 tracks on the blu-ray audio disc earlier tonight, and, somewhat to my surprise, I was disappointed - they sounded a bit more like what I remember the SACD sounding like in terms of lack of coherence - and the low brass and organ part I mentioned in my other post about The Miraculous Mandarin also stuck out almost as unpleasantly as I'd remembered from the SACD. Notwithstanding the fact that I also heard the SACD in MCh, there's just something in general about the additional channels which tends to mitigate some of the miscalculations on the part of the engineers. (Is this akin to better coverage with more shower heads? LOL!) It's also interesting that the non-Dolby-Atmos MCh tracks on the blu-ray are in 5.1, as opposed to 5.0 on the SACD. And those 5.1 non-Dolby tracks on the blu-ray sound excellent too. Add to that the two height channels (as I currently have Dolby Atmos set up on my system) and it just seems that there's just more wiggle room to improve the sound, especially since the channels can be individually adjusted, if one is so inclined.

Sorry I can't be as positive as I expected to be about the 2Ch tracks - especially since I now feel that the Dolby Atmos tracks of this Salonen/LAPO disc embody some of the most impressive sound I've ever heard on my system. BTW, my Martha Argerich "Complete Chopin on DG" set ("remastered for Dolby Atmos") arrived earlier today and I listened to the First Concerto (with Abbado) and a couple of the Preludes - here the Dolby Atmos SQ was not quite as impressive to my ears as it was on the Karajan/Beethoven, the Karajan/Sibelius, and the Salonen/LAPO albums. The SQ of the tracks on the Argerich album I heard was still pretty good, but it wasn't the "great leap forward" characteristic of those other sets (at least based on what I've heard so far).
