Two videos were uploaded, the two days of the Finals, which took place on August 6/7, 2021..... I believe the best performance was on August 6.......
Pianist Yedam Kim put forth what I thought was a superlative Rachmaninoff Concerto Three, the second performance in the August 6 video..... It was one of the best performances I've heard with this concerto in recent time...... I liked her performance a lot better than Martin Garcia's performance of the same concerto following day. I thought Garcia really struggled during the latter half of the work..... (The orchestral accompaniment seemed more laser-focused during the Kim performance.)
Long time resident conductor Jahja Ling (a real sleeper as a conductor) conducting the Cleveland Orchestra at Severance Hall.....
The August 6 performances had the new flutist, Jessica Sindell, really impressed, she could be the best principal flute the Orchestra has had since John Rautenberg...... (Assistant principal oboist Jeff Rathbun was first oboe in this one, I like him a LOT better than the primary principal Frank Rosenwein, who performed first oboe in the other video. I also liked Lyle Steelman on trumpet and Shachar Israel on trombone.) The Orchestra as a whole sounded as good as I've heard it in a LONG time. (I like how the Orchestra performs with conductors *other* than Franz-Welser Most.)
Note that the stereo channels (on both videos) are crossed, the first violins emanate from the right channel..... (I do find this disconcerting, I just swap the channels on the headphone cables.)
