Home Classical Court

From Perotin to Prokofiev (and beyond), performed by Caruso to Khatia, it's all here.

You forgot Debussy's "Le petit negre"

Talk about problematic!

I guess this title was SO problematic that our workesters these days have now insisted that its title be changed to "Le petit noir"!

Just staying with Debussy, let's consider some of his other pieces which were influenced by the music of other cultures: like the first of the orchestral Nocturnes (Nuages, whose second theme is one which can be played only on the black keys of the piano), or the first piece of his piano suite, Estampes. Beyond Debussy, we could consider Ravel in his Ma mere l'Oye, and the section entitled Laideronnette, imperatrice des pagodes. Considering further, we might mention Puccini's Turandot, as well as composers like Alexander Tcherpnin, Lou Harrison, Henry Cowell (who used to live in Menlo Park, California), Grechaninov (whose arrangements of Asian tunes bear a striking similarity to the themes in Stravinsky's Rite of Spring!), and Bartok. But why would we consider all this? Could it be that some listeners are simply ignorant of these developments? I'm just asking the question.
