Home Classical Court

From Perotin to Prokofiev (and beyond), performed by Caruso to Khatia, it's all here.

She of course is right

As some of the commenters pointed out, if she can't breathe or get the words out, then what's the point? His reply ("It doesn't matter - nobody can hear the words anyway") is just plain embarrassing. Of course, Bernstein had his moments, but his lapses of taste put him far down the ladder for me.

OTOH, I used to have Christa Ludwig's recording (along with her husband, Walter Berry) of Mahler's Des Knaben Wunderhorn - a double LP with Bernstein conducting the orchestral version and also playing the piano version. I was impressed by his playing on the piano versions of the songs, because some of them are pretty darned awkward to play. (I know from experience!)
