Beethoven's Ninth is one of those works in which we'll never encounter a "perfect" performance...... The better ones have minor scrapes and cuts, the poorer ones are either run into the ground or butchered to death......Maybe the most-critical passage of the Ninth that I encounter being messed up, which just takes down the entire performance, is whenever the monumental and majestic final Maestoso is "raced through"...... (I liken it to a great figure skating performance, until the skater absolutely blows the last jump.) Yet it is a passage that I've not once heard a great Beethoven conductor fail in this regard..... Not one.....
Link is a short snippet of the B-9 ending done right...... Myung-Whun Chung conducting.
