That is a good one. I can't say I usually spend much time listening to the Egmont Overture or other Beethoven overturs. es very often. And I like overtures now and again. But your post moved me to listen to some other recordings.
Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt did a fine recording with the VPO available on YouTube. There's a name we don't mention very often nowadays.
I rather like Ansermet's set of the Beethoven symphonies and some of the overtures, but the recording quality of the Egmont Overture is not so good, though the performance seems good enough.
Rene Leibowitz's recording with the RPO has always seemed to me to be very effective. It's the coupling to Reiner's recording of the Brahms 4th Symphony on Chesky CD-6.
