Perhaps it was because Celibidache started out in pure math... but I have read that Celi was unattracted to most of Mahler's large works because he found them lacking in comprehensible form.
He was quoted as saying something along the lines of, "Mahler knows how to start a movement but he can't decide how to finish it." (Quoted from memory.)
The only work that AFAIK Celi performed was Kindertotenlieder. Which, btw, was the occasion of the worst Valentine's-Day date of my young life.
(Memo to self: Research the orchestral program first. AND WHO WAS THE EINSTEIN WHO PROGRAMMED KTNLD FOR FEB. 14 ?????)
