If you are that afraid of making a mistake, do what most of us do. Buy it on the used market then move it back out if it doesn't cut it.
If a dealer has a piece of equipment that is earmarked as a demo, then he can certainly send it home with you for the weekend. This applies to your local dealer.
But if you buy it new on the internet and have it shipped to you, then you own it. If a restocking fee is applied, then the dealer can recoup some of the loss if you send it back, because he certainly now has to sell it as used gear.
The bottom line here is that you need to do your homework. Audition locally if possible and buy from that shop. Internet sales are for bargain deals when you are absolutely sure about the item, not for when you aren't.
Don't worry about avoiding temptation. As you grow older, it will avoid you.
