which of the 4 Horsemen ... OMNI / PLANER /CO-AXIAL / DYNAMIC ... did you end up with ?

this year I tried all 4 types of speakers.

Budget versions ..... some Ohm 4s ...... Magnepan LRS ,,,,, Focal Evo.....and then finally Presonus Co-Axial self powered monitors.

all these were 400 to 800 bucks .... not exactly Wilson WAMM Master Chronosonic .... which by the way I have heard several times with ultra expensive gear - LOL

The Ohms were fantastic in the sound stage arena but displayed major problems which I attribute to the wonky cross-over and compromised inverted speakers ... on the other hand the German Physik version is pretty fantastic and has won many awards being a true walsh F type speaker.

the Maggies I liked - they had a big sound stage but there was a diffuse quality that I found irritating and defiantly where not nearly as resolving in the treble as an AMT speaker which I borrowed and A/B .
I also spent some time with the larger model Maggies at a local store and found the size of performers extremely over exaggerated - not my thing.

Spent time with some 15 grand Martin Logins and thought they sounded absolutely like crap. The bass and electrostatic unit did not integrate - at all !

Spent time with a Focal monitor and was impressed with the soundstage , detail and bass .... seemed like a real move up from the LRS

Then finally took a chance on a very small co-axial studio recording monitor from a company called presonus - BINGO !

here is the thing ,,,,, the imaging is amazing .... sense of depth is world class .... vocal are spooky real....

BUT - the biggest thing is now I am not intellectually analyzing the system or the sound ... I am not playing particular tracks like I am doing a demo in a store ..... I am listening to entire CD discs from start to finish .... I am standing up out of the chair and singing ,,,, I am closing my eyes and dreaming ... I think the phase errors of the other designs were driving me to distraction and my mind could not relax and enjoy the music - no more !

I could use a tube pre-amp which folks normally use to create a big sound stage but I dont really need it as the speaker deign in incredibly 3d already .... maybe a Conrad Johnson vintage unit

now I am dreaming of some Tannoy Westminster's !

any of you guys go thru an auditioning period and end up going in a surprising direction ?
