Most carriers don't care about weight, just package dimensions. Higher shipping rates started with the USPS - their postal trucks (called Grumman LLVs, or Long Life Vehicles - were never designed to carry the amount of packages common in the Amazon age. The trucks can only hold so many parcels - and they are awkward to load and unload - so post office shipping rates went up. And UPS and FedEx pat more for fuel and salaries, so their shipping rates also have gone up.
Back in 2005 I shipped dozens of pieces of stereo gear at a fraction of today's rates. I have more that I want to sell but can only do so locally due to today's shipping costs.
