Not necessarily.

My first system was a McIntosh 1900 receiver and McII speakers in the '70s. I went from store to store and listened to systems in my price range. Then I'd go back and listen to the Mac. I didn't want to spend the money, but with my limited choices (that I knew about) I bought the McIntosh pieces because they sounded the best. They held their value too. I later sold the receiver and speakers for what I originally had paid for them. My second system was a McIntosh C28 preamp and Mc2120 amp and Klipsch Cornwall speakers. None of my stuff had the meters. It was just solid reliable equipment. It's probably all still in use somewhere today.
