UPDATE RE: VPI HW-19 bearing issues

The bearing well has a large sealing screw at the bottom of the assembly. I was able to remove the screw- which contains the thrust plate on the surface that is inside of the well. Plate looks smooth and flat.

There was oil in the well, and the oil was not dark, thick or burnt.

With the shaft now open from top to bottom, I could not see any obstructions.

I used a q-tip to probe from the bottom of the well, and along the sides. I was able to feel a slight lip around the inner surface, located at the approximate point where the the bearing shaft stops sinking into the well.

There does not seem to be any damage to the outside of the bearing well.

What could cause this lip or obstruction ?

Thank you.
