RE: How many LAYERS of TUBES do you really need?

I thought I'd tip my toe into the tube sound using an Audible Illusion preamp as a phone stage for an Ortofon 30H cartridge that's part of my Thorens TD 124 setup. Output would go to an Ayre KX-5 Twenty preamp and KV-5 Twenty amp (no negative feedback). Unfortunately the right channel of the AI seems to be out even though the tubes light up, and I've yet to send it in for service. The Ayre stuff sounds so good I'm not sure what value the AI could add.
