It was 1998, and in 1998->1999 I was in Graduate school, that little MP3 player with 32 MEGABYTES (yes megabytes) got me through graduate school pretty happy.
I remember playing this track over and over again, trying to pass all my classes... that little mp3 player was a blessing, not even USB it used a serial port.

I gave up on MP3 as soon as Ogg Vorbis was in development, I remember checking Xiph.org constantly, reading Monty's memos. Then after that FLAC was getting good and I switched to that over a decade ago. Right now FLAC does everything I need even high res recording which I do from time to time when I record my own music.
