Heard at the pizza parlor: Supertramp, "Cannonball"

With all of the Chinese restaurants booked, what do you do for Lunar New Year? Go for pizza. The Dubs are thrashing the Clippers, the entire 4th quarter is garbage time, the customers are quiet. You then notice and hear Supertramp's "Cannonball" playing, which brings you back to the summer of 1985.

You are an entering high school freshman, taking Oceanography. Your lab partner is the comely, solidly popular, well-liked, merciful, and classy senior, Hina[lani]. You and Hina struggle to find anything in common. You stumble upon (popular) music, which breaks the ice, and finally opens up the conversations.

Sigh, but even in music, you feel inferior to Hina. She has a smaller, slicker, more expensive Walkman than you. Shoot, hers even has a 5-band graphic equalizer. Oh well, that just prepares you for being an audiophile, where everyone else's stereo is better than yours.

Because she is born and raised in Honolulu, Hina reveals that she likes straight-up pop music, with Madonna and Wham among her favorites. Since you hail from San Francisco, you add to that new wave, dance, and rock. You tell Hina that when you left San Francisco, some of your more obscure new favorites included Robert Plant's "Little By Little," Prefab Sprout's "When Love Breaks Down," and the song currently on the radio, Supertramp's "Cannonball."

Hearing the sophisticated prog rock of "Cannonball," Hina is won over by your exposure to, knowledge of, and taste in music.

After class, Hina's stylish girlfriends stop by. They huddle, decide where to eat lunch, and then agree to go to Waiola shave ice after that. You'd love to go with them...... No. Your thoughts of, and craving for, the shave ice take precedence.

Alas, you being a freshman visitor, your parents are picking you up from school. You feel lame, but hey, now you can go back to your own Walkman, and wait for Supertramp's "Cannonball" to come on the radio.

So here we are, almost 32 years later, and in pockets here and there, such as the local pizza parlor, you still hear "Cannonball."
