WHich Monitor Audio speakers are you using? Some are quite good and others less so.
As for cables, I use only Goertz flat ribbon cables for both ICs and speakers. Silver for the ICs and Copper for the speakers. I find that they are the least colored of all cables I have tried.
I do not try to tune my system with cables. I find the most neutral, least restrictive I can find and then I do the same for the electronics.
I also do very little to treat my rooms. If the gear is really good I find that the room treatment is more like icing on the cake rather than a fundamental requirement. In other words I have never heard a bad system suddenly get good from room treatment...never. I have only one time heard a really good system sound bad from the room but they had glass on 2 whole sides of the room and it was reverb city.
