Especially when written, there are numerous ways one can interpret the words of a sentence and the point made by 'mt10425' is an excellent one. In light of this, word choice is critically important for a writer and it could well be that JVS merely chose a few words badly. Most of us do not know JVS, so it is difficult for us to read what he wrote while fully understanding his intent. Even 'very, very sad' has enough flexibility to be read as you suggest or as a condemnation.
In truth, what's most sad is that discussions like this even exist. I suspect it's what JA hoped to avoid by 'sweeping it under the rug'.
