I've read this a couple of times and your post. JVS says "very very sad" as if highly disappointed, dismayed and frustrated that there are not more minorities attending audio shows. That doesn't smack of racism to me.
The part that you bolded is his explanation as to why this is the case - and I can understand why some would find the commentary inflammatory but to call it racist is pushing it. The problem is that education systems are NOT equal across America (or Canada) and some regions have a lot more money to spend. In poor districts the arts (music/art/drama) are the first things to get cut (Mr. Holland's Opus is bang on). So it's not terribly surprising that in areas around the U.S. where fat cat rich white guys don't live, schools in those areas will have limited funds. Music will get cut. Where I taught in Canada the schools dropped music. Art and Drama were still hanging on by a thread based on donated costumes and an Art teacher that was spending large parts of her salary to keep it supplied (1/4 of her yearly salary). The wonderful music room was turned into a weight room for an extension to the Gym.
Living in HK - there is a significant amount of knowledge of classical music evidenced by a a very high number of symphonies the go on here and by the numerous music schools and instrument sales as well as the BIG classical music selection at all of the record stores here. In Canada and the U.S. most of the outlets selling CDs have gutted the classical and jazz selection either completely or have one small rack left of only the major artists.
I think JVS should avoided talking about race and commented on class associated to declining income and an education system not being funded like it was 25-30 years ago.
I had lunch with JVS, Constantine Soo, Jack Roberts, and Ray Seda on or staff. If JVS was a racist he wold not have sat with us.
So let's not go over the top on such things based on a sentence the guy writes.
