As a kid my father was always telling me to turn it down. When I finally heard hard rock band live I was astounded at how loud they played. And as the years passed they played it louder and louder until I found it oppressive. For one thing, the sound tends to blur when it gets too loud, for a number of reasons. I have heard symphony orchestras live (without supplementary amplification) several times and they have never played nearly as loud as a rock band or even as loud what you hear in some audio showrooms. I guess when all else fails you crank the volume.
