I didn't think the OP's question was so difficult, but judging from all the off-base replies reading comprehension is not a strong suit here, just as staying on-topic generally is not, lol.
No, I don't think one has to play an instrument to appreciate music in the manner that musicians do, but it probably helps significantly. I have a great respect for the the development of many types of music. The more I hear it live, or on a really good playback system, the more I truly appreciate it, as I become vastly more drawn into the depths of it, and just how much hard work it can take from so many people to create it, live or recorded well.
That being said, I am not so sure that a lot of musicians really appreciate it all that much. Considering why many modern musicians get into playing an instrument, and continue to so so, doesn't necessarily lend credence to them having any true appreciation for it, lol.
Also, consider those those with unnatural genius abilities to create vs those who must slave away at the process to even remotely match the least of the genius's talents such as Mozart vs Salieri. Which of those two do you think had the truer appreciation for producing great music, lol?
I certainly don't have to be a rocket scientist to appreciate the incredible effort it took to land the Curiosity rover on Mars. I am amazed each and every time I think about it. Every time I have watched a symphony play I always watch for those with the smallest of parts, and admire their desire to play their instrument even though they often have such small parts within the greater whole.
So, no, I don't think it does, but I would say that there are probably an astronomical number of people who likely prefer to remain totally ignorant of such processes, simply because it would actually take some effort to do so.
