That's just routine due-diligence in product development, especially against a strongly dominant competitor.
But sometimes outfits do strange things with the data. One time I actually had a competitor that ran a full color Ad. with pictures of the innards of their product and one of ours, the message being that theirs was a better deal because it had so many more parts inside for the same money. When I saw that I zipped down the hall, slapped it on my boss's desk and said that I deserved a raise. He thought it was hilarious also but still failed to draw the proper fiscal conclusion...
Now mind you I knew that theirs had worse performance because I had tested it. All it takes to fail in any endeavor is to not understand your competition, or their customers or your customers.
