RE: A "sudzy" question: Can non-musicians ever truly appreciate/understand music to the extent that musicians do?

Knowing theory and the history of music enables one to enjoy music on other planes. Aaron copeland talked of the basic liking of music as the Shearly Musical Plane, however, there is much more to music than that. In Beethoven's 1st Symphony, he keeps the listener in suspense from the very beginning by not defineing tonic for measures after it starts. When fineally tonic is announced, it brings a "satisfaction" that really feels good and is intellectually satisfying. Mozart in his 40th Sympony gives the violas and lower strings a rhymic riff and then brings in the melody. If he just started with that exact melody, it wouldn't sound the same since the listener would assume that the beginning notes are on the 1st beat of the measure instead of the 4th beat of the previous one as was composed. Knowing and understanding these little insights add immeseaurably to the listening experience.
