I consider myself a "music audiophile" not an "equipment audiophile" as I love natural sounding audiophile recordings. I don't need megabuck equipment to play them on just something to bring out their realism and beauty. And I love a great deal, as my father taught me "never pay retail". I have paid retail a few times, and could kick myself a few months later when the price goes down. I try very hard to buy used, demo, clearance as that is the most cost effective.
I don't want to be part of an audio group that brags about how much they pay, I want to be part of an audio group that brags about how little they pay and how great their music sounds.
I have heard really expensive equipment and it usually does sound better (not always). But it should of course to justify the price, however the law of diminishing returns sets in early. Trickle down may not work in Economics, but it does in stereo equipment. The early adapters of a new audio design pay dearly when the design is new, however within a few years the same or close to the same sonics will be available at a fraction of the price. Good things come to those with patience.
