A flaw in your premise is that you're tying high-end to high price. It implies that high end price equates to high end performance. However, as has been shown time and again, high price doesn't equate to high performance; rather, many lower-priced products outperform higher-priced products.
Another flaw in your premise is leaving out the components which would comprise such a system. Reel-to-reel (and how many machines)? AM-FM tuner? Turntable/tonearm/cartridge (and how many)? Blu-ray/CD player(s)? Active crossovers and bi/tri/quad-amped speakers? What kind of room would those speakers have to fill, and at what level? How efficient would they be? Headphones? Cables? Music-optimized computer? Outboard DAC? Many people couldn't care less about R-R, but those who do have spent many thousands of dollars on a single Studer A80 or Ampex ATR-100 or Stellavox. If I have 4 yesteryear Ampex AG440s, does that equal one killer ATR? How much does a "high-end" outboard DAC cost? What is the cost multiplying factor for so-called "high end" single driver speakers versus multi-driver speakers with active crossovers and multiple amplifiers?
Another flaw in your premise is not making a distinction between used and new equipment purchases. As has been shown time and again, very high quality equipment can be purchased used for substantial discounts from new retail prices.
Finally, another flaw is that you make no reference to when the equipment, whether new or used, was purchased. Prices change. $25K in 2012 dollars, or in 2000 dollars or in 1990 dollars, or what?
