Its an ideal present / somewhat short term future

Really the only thing holding back that setup from being "cloud" is upload speeds. Which, I would add, are artificially limited at present. For a number of reasons. But, IMO that will be done away with within 5 years, if not sooner.

Once we start seeing upload speeds in the 10 megabit+ area there will be little reason to have that much stored locally. If only for retention reasons. Which brings me to my question, how is that stored locally for you? Im hoping you have that in some kind of RAID level 5 five drive configuration. As someone who also does that on a smaller scale, I always have 2 drives mirrored for any real effort made to rip something important. Right now I havnt the time to commit ripping my CD DVD collection in bulk. So its a small chunk here and there.

Dont get me wrong, IMO what your doing is what most of us audiophile tech nerds wish to have in place. In fact, I just pulled a Dell Precision workstation from trash and added a second Intel Xeon quad core CPU to it to pull network storage / transcodeing duties for. Heck with only $60 in it for the second CPU and heatsink, why not.

I would also say, having allot of my library ripped has made me listen to more stuff I wouldnt normally have bothered to pull the disc out for. Im VERY pro computer for that reason alone. I find I stray from the beaten path far more often because of it. The convenience is GREAT! I love my MHDT Havana DAC also.

You really gotta hand it to the likes of Itunes and Netflix however. For the common, and then some, person, its easy to do what your basically doing for little money and hardware invested. Which I think is great for them. Granted, encoding quality is no where near what you have going there but again, for a normal person, its the greatest. And as long as a high speed connection is available, theres your library.

Yep, interesting times we live in! Fun to be a audio / computer nerd these days. They can really compliment each other.

Nice setup! Oh yeah, what did you rip the audio CDs in? Format, bit rate, software?
