I listen to music during much of my waking hours. I listen to CD's and to sources like Pandora through the 9.2 channels of my home theater system set to "All Channel Stereo" while multitasking around the house and when I host get togethers that are not particularly themed with music in mind. You could certainly call this background music, and I see nothing about it to be ashamed about.
I also spend at least a couple of hours a day in my music room, doing some serious listening over my dedicated two channel system. I'm usually alone and not distracted by anything else when I'm enjoying music this way.
