$300 is about what most people just starting out ask me about, and after verifying they can't/won't spend more, my answer is always the same.
Buy USED! Vintage used, at that. An old NAD receiver or integrated for around $100, then a pair of the best sounding speakers you can find for $100-150(usually PSB, or Paradigm - often with stands), spend what's left on source (an iPod, CD player, or their computer). I wouldn't spend anything extra on wire or interconnects. A sub can be added latter if the speakers are a little small. Often, I've helped friends find "systems" under $500 that are centered around a pair of really nice speakers... DCMs, are remarkably inexpensive, easy to drive, and very forgiving of less expensive electronics. Early Vandersteen 2s, older Snells & Thiels are all often available for just a couple (maybe three) hundred, Magnepan SMGs are another possability - I bought my SMGas for $175!
The deals are out there, but under $500, used is the only way to get real "bang for the buck".
