As an engineer, I do find it a bit worrying that anyone would spend thousands of dollars to buy a piece of equipment based upon only a data sheet (which in my experience is mostly a marketing exercise!). And even more worrying that someone would dismiss out of hand someone who claims good results with something simply because it doesn't jive with his or her understanding of science and engineering (open mindedness is key to pushing the state of the art forward - though healthy skepticism as well as willingness to learn is key to doing that)
If we understood everything about human hearing, there would be no need to have so much money spent in audiology research. If we understood how the brain perceives sensory input as well as thinking, Cognitive Science would be a waste of time and money. But we don't and it's not. To think otherwise is hubris.
IN a lot of ways - we all are describing a painting - and one side is arguing that without a measurement of each brushstroke and pigment color you cannot possibly know if it is a good piece of art, and the other group is shouting at the first that the frame color and canvas used really determines if the picture is going to be good or not. But in reality, we might as well just LOOK at it, and be glad it is as good as it is, and let the artist get on gettin' on making more! :)
