RE: bjh - I found your post the most interesting

Why thanks!

As to the query I guess I'd say it depends upon the listener. I have no doubt there "are listeners with crappy $300 consumer CD units" that are completely happy and get all they need from their systems.

The problem, if that's the correct word, is when one extrapolates from that position to presume that such should be perfectly adequate for others.

I'll give an example based on a tune that I've been focusing on quite a bit of late, Clapton's cover of "We're All the Way" (Don Williams) on Slowhand.

It is a simple tune, too short (see linked post - mine), that really grabs me. The arrangement likewise is simplicity itself, fingered electric guitar doubled by acoustic, Clapton vocal with female backing, drums and bass, and with vibes appearing about half way in.

Yet while simple I find in endearing in many ways. The woman doing backing vocal (it's almost a duet) makes it interesting in her choice of harmony, e.g. drops an octave when you anticipate a rise, that sort of thing. The vibes (if that's the correct instrument) are recorded very well so have that "scary realism" thing going on. And for some reason, again while simple, the acoustic guitar work is just plain lovely.

I have two active tables in my setup, one a vintage DD fully automatic with a modest (but very good) Ortofon 2M Red MM cartridge, and on my "main" table a AT OC9 ML/II MC cartridge (low-output). Actually at the moment I have another vintage DD table going, a JVC QL-50 that I bought "just because", that I fitted with arm (came without) and Benz Micro MC20II MC cartridge (hi-output) ... "just because" because, well, I was curious, and heck, it is my hobby after all! Incidentally my phono stage hosts 3 tables, each with individual settings, and allows switching between at the push of a button, you can even do that by remote control but truth be told most of the time I don't even know where the remote is! lol

In any case that tune has been played numerous times on all three tables, and I really enjoy it on all of them but frankly on the main table I dig it the most. On that table the acoustic guitar in particular stands out better, you really hear it, the delicacy of the sound, your brain almost lets you "see" the fingers moving, that sort of thing. Same thing for the female voice, the little inflections, the "trueness" of tone, the way she seems to be almost trying to "contain" or lessen pathos when dropping octave(s).

So to the point of your query ... Played on that table I'm getting more, more "meaning", and I would maintain it's because I'm receiving more to digest.

OK, enough eh?

Well that's just it isn't it! Some would read the foregoing and say, "What the F is that dude smoking"! I can understand that, no problem, and I can't really explain why I'm that way, I simply am.

Mind you I can just as easily go all "manly" and talk about Beethoven's Eroica (Symphony #3), what a power trip it is to listen to it on a great system (like mine he-he) that can go loud without breaking a sweat, how the experience is enhanced by "really" hearing the power blasts of the trumpets, etc., etc.

But then such is likely to elicit the same reaction.

So, a neurosis? Sure why not, no problem, it's not harming others as far as I can see ... well it does seem to upset some, but I suspect that has more to do with their own neurosis that with mine. LOL

So I say that if one is going to embrace their neurosis then feed it properly. If I'm wrong about the harmlessness, especially to others, then I suppose some day the guys in white suits will show up and cart me away to get fixed! Until then ...
