I think they are just interested in seeing whether what we hear is generated by the actual piece of gear or by our own internal variability.
A (stereotypical) subjectivist thinks the only thing that changes is the gear and never the listener, and an objectivist recognizes that we ourselves are part of the system variability equation, as well.
Trying to figure out which is which at any given moment is kind of intriguing....to an objectivist.
Plenty of fine people in either camp!
