It's becoming a rather prominent sub-genre of science fiction, typically set in an "alternate" 19th century universe and based on the way Victorian era technology "might have" evolved. Primary inspirations are HG Wells and Jules Verne, with nods to other writers of the era who dabbled in "futuristic" speculation.
