Although the goggles in question are Steam Punk, which is entirely different from punk rock, I have to ask: When has punk rock NOT been, to at least some degree, a fashion statement? The Sex Pistols were specifically put together by McLaren as a fashion statement.
Purists always try to make it only about the music, but music and fashion have always gone hand in hand. Elvis was into clothes as much as music, and every one of Bowie's incarnations has had a fashion element, just as a couple of examples.
Mods, greasers, ripped shirts, safety pins, spandex, flannel shirts -- it's been the same story from 1956 until now.
