Teresa,
I own a phone and have for years. The first one kept going until there were no more analog towers. The second one is basic Motorola. It cost $40. I pay $100 for 1000 minutes. I've never used those 1000 minutes in any given year. They rollover the excess if you renew ahead of time. This year I started out with 1400 minutes. You can't find a pay phone anymore when you are out and about. Who ever is leaving home for the longest or farthest takes the phone. $10 a month for the ability to make a call when you are away from home doesn't seem excessive.
