My sister's is a 1st generation and it still works. In addition to the Classic 160 I got last year, I've got a 1st gen Shuffle that's six years old and still works perfectly despite having sat in a desk drawer uncharged for nearly 5 years.
A co-worker has an 80 GB model that looks like it was run over by a bus, yet still works just fine.
But...as you say, you've been thinking iPad, and you've got plenty of company. iPod sales have been falling off for several years as tablet computers and smart phones can do what iPods do and more.
I'd love to have an iPhone 4s but I'll be damned if I'll pay for a data plan. The iPhone can access the web anywhere there's wireless which is nearly everywhere I go, yet the telecoms require that you buy their data plans. Shouldn't be legal.
