Oft misguided

EQ is useful. But analog EQ is fraught with difficulties: bad frequency response compared to the transfer function you'd expect from the unit, phase distortion, other nasties.

Digital EQ on the other hand, is darned near ideal, (assuming digital source) and can correct things well- unless you (as most do) overuse it. Careful measurement and calibration is needed with ANY eq to get it to perform right.
