HI,
Well, when I had them (1962 (Dynaco PAS-3) to 1982 (H-K Citation) I rarely used them. Then I stepped up to ARC preamps which do not have tone controls. Now, I wish I had them for the not so infrequent tonally bad recordings. I do have and use the bass level controls for my actively crossed over bi-amped subwoofers which is close to a bass tone control but only for the deep bass.In general, I think tone controls are a band-aid that detracts from a high end sound even if set at 0dB. But they can be a useful band-aid. And a well designed bypass switch, such as on ARC pre's, could give the best of both worlds. For now to the forseeable future, I will live without them and be happy.
There is no doubt that well designed tone controls are expensive to implement and I wonder if their lack isn't primarily an ecconomic decision based upon them being rarely used.
Sparky
