Perhaps...

Like everything else in audio, MP3's are a lot trickier than a casual user would suppose. While the largest factor is the bit-rate, the encoder chosen, it's settings and even it's version make quite a difference. As does the player software, computer and sound card. And the listener. One shouldn't just deafly believe the recommended LAME settings.

The best compromise between size and sound for me was encoding at 256K with some careful tweaking. This was my "Hi-Fi" threshold because the essential character, and enjoyment, of the music was preserved if not every nuance. Recording and mastering problems were starting to dominate compression problems.

I think a companion question is what percentage of one's CD or record collection can be considered Hi-Fi? I would say less than 1/3 of mine.
