In a perfect world you wouldn't need them but, IMO, well designed tone controls ,potentially, can be very useful. Of course, many audiophiles use tube rolling and cables, at sometimes great expense, to do the same thing while maintaining their audiophile purity.
All our systems are compromised by many things beyond our control ( most often the abundance of poor recordings). The assumption that tone controls can't be designed that contribute more than they degrade makes no sense to me.
