Are 8-tracks or cassettes consideredHi-Fi?

...throughout the recent history of recorded music, there have been other popular formats that were less than Hi-Fi.

When CDs first came out in the early 1980's, many audiophiles did not consider them to be High End.

High End audio survived - and will continue.

MP3 is not High End but anything that encorages people to listen to more music is positive.

There are High End digital download and playback formats.

For example, hi rez music downloads are available from MusicGiants @1100 kbps.

I recorded all the music on my iPod from CDs in Apple Lossless (compressed but not lossy), probably the most popular hi rez playback format.

A doctor I know from my gym got a new iPod, noticed mine and asked about it. I explained Apple Lossless and my Shure E5c earbuds (that cost more than the 60Gb iPod), then let him plug his cheap earbuds into mine to listen. He said he could hear the difference between mine and his MP3s - there was more music "there" - he described it as more dense. He said my set up was like a $70,000 Lexus and his was like a $20,000 Honda Civic - that got him where he wanted to go.

Spend some time in the 'Digtal-PC Audio' Asylum and you'll discover a whole world of High End digital audio and tweaking.

The future of High End audio is a home audio server with music recorded in hi rez.
