It's a good start to clean up your services. You should know what processes are running, whether services or not. The only processes that should be running are those that are doing things you need done.I use process explorer from sysinternals.com- this is free. He also provides a free tool to see what is starting up at boot- there are things starting from several places, including the registry.
To look at processes and start up, as well as other useful info, I use Hijack This, but you need to study it to know what it is telling you.
