I don't think they need to have the same power handling but different speakers like you're suggesting will have different sensitivity ratings (require a different amount of power to play at the same level) and you will definitely want to ensure that they can produce the same volume in the listening position as do the front speakers.I'm not familiar with your Denon AVR-587 but I have a 2807. If you have an auto set-up function, that should take care of matching the volumes of the front and surround speakers for you. What you will find is that the Monitors and the Bose are tonally different. A tonal difference between fronts and surrounds may not be too bad—I lived with that kind of difference for a brief period—but a lot will depend on just how different they are tonally. In my case, the 2807's Audyssey room EQ function helped to blend them in reasonably well but I don't think the 587 has Audyssey. Actually matching the front and surround speakers definitely produces a more seamless surround experience.
If you start looking at adding a centre speaker as well down the track, my experience is that the centre should very definitely tonally match the front L & R speakers. Tonal shifts in voices moving to and from the centre from the other speakers are very noticeable and jarring, much more so than I found tonal changes between the front and surround speakers.
