OT: Help with PC monitor. Hardware or software?

I'm currently using a 7 year old NEC MultiSync FE700. Hot sh-t back then. Running XP with an AMD mucho GHz, etc.
Dark pix on Audiogon are black cat in a coal mine. Those annoying websites with deep purple backgrounds and black print are absolutely unreadable.
NVidia GEForce 4 driver. Highest 32 bit setting 800x600.
I've played around with the monitor controls with no improvement.
Do I need a new monitor?
Are my settings wrong?
Are dark pix and purple/black websites not worth the trouble (everything else is great)?
Would a $175 Samsung flat panel like I have at work do a better job?
