Re: Food for thought. Is the placebo effect a spiritual principle? [nt]

Given that this is an audio forum, your question is a particularly valid one. I’ve always wondered if the placebo effect is tied to one’s ego. We all want to believe that we’ve made the right decision and that life will work out as we’ve planned it. It’s a natural reaction to a life that’s far from perfect. When our expectations fall short, I think it’s easy for us to start to question ourselves and the choices we’ve made, and will make. It certainly doesn’t have such a profound effect on everyone, but it definitely does on me.

Many will doubtless disagree with this, but I think a fair number of audiophiles have fragile egos and are naturally insecure. Many of us seek perfection in our audio reproduction and use the hobby (and music in general) to heal ourselves in some way. When that doesn’t happen, we can take it hard. As I said above, we need to feel that we made the right decision. Hence, the placebo effect has a very real role, not only in audio but in life in general. I’ve been guilty of succumbing to it—more than a few times.

Anyway, that’s my lame-ass theory, FWIW. :)
